The Wild West has always been one of the most popular subjects of nonsport cards and Leaf jumped into the fray in 1966 with a 72-card issue depicting nearly every superstar of the West. All of the legendary lawmen are present--Wyatt Earp and his brother Virgil, Wild Bill Cody, Pat Garrett, Jim Bowie, Bat Masterson--as well as the outlaws--Billy the Kid, Jesse and Frank James, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Younger Brothers, John Wesley Hardin, Black Bart, Curly Bill Brocius, Johnny Ringo--and even those characters who walked the line between criminal and law enforcer--Jack Behan, Elfago Baca, etc. Also featured are some of the Native American characters: Crazy Horse, Geronimo, Sitting Bull, Chief Joseph. There is even a card of General George Custer. The set is numbered to 73: card number 40 was never issued. Whether this was a mistake or a trick designed to lure kids into buying more packs is unknown, but Leaf is notorious for skip numbering its sports sets from the late 1940s. The set averages near mint or better, with a few lesser and a few better, #1 card, EX.
