Presented here is an incredible piece of football history. This Philadelphia Eagles payroll check dated 12/17/1937 is signed three times by Bert Bell, the team's co-founder and owner. In addition to Bell's contributions to the Eagles franchise, he is an important figure to the Pittsburgh Steelers team, where he served as part-owner and coach, and to the National Football League, where served as Commissioner from 1946 until his death in 1959. For all his contributions to the game of football, he was enshrined in the Football Hall of Fame as part of the inaugural class in 1963. The check bears three signatures from Bert Bell-- it is made payable to Bert Bell, authorized in his given name of De Benneville Bell as President of the Eagles, and endorsed on the reverse by Bert Bell. Each of the three signatures is boldly executed and neatly positioned in their respective place.
