This set was brought to us along with the 1953 Topps set in the preceeding lot. It was also assembled card by card in the early 1980s by our consignor who painstakingly looked for presentable examples to add to his collection. Today we can look at his efforts and remark about the consistency with which he built this set and preserved it over the years. The 1954 Topps set is the stronger of the two offered in this auction. Overall condition is EX-MT to NM with many cards falling squarely within the 6-7 grade range. A sampling of six star cards from this set were picked for grading by SGC. The key card, Hank Aaron's rookie #128, was evaluated SGC 60 EX due to honest corner wear and side to side centering. The final card in the set, Ted Williams #250, was graded SGC 60 EX due to centering. Another key rookie, Cubs star Ernie Banks, was graded SGC 30 due to the presence of an erased pencil mark on the reverse despite presenting VG-EX. Card #90 Willie Mays was graded SGC 80 EX-MT and Tigers star Al Kaline's rookie graded SGC 70 EX+ with each card's centering playing a role in holding back the grade. A total of 42 cards have been scanned below as a representation of the ungraded balance. While several of the stars grade in the VG-EX to EX range due to centering or corner wear, many of the commons display vibrant color and pinpoint centering. This set is another excellent opportunity to add a set to your collection that was built with consistent condition and eye appeal in mind.
