This lot features a fantastic complete set of 1953 Topps. Compiled by our consignor nearly 30 years ago, this set was built with eye appeal in mind. Upon scanning through the set, one's eye is most immediately drawn to the vibrant color throughout. Almost every card retains the original gloss that makes the artwork of the 1953 Topps set so stunning. Beyond that, the set remains in overall EX-MT condition with a number of cards grading higher and a few lower due to more advanced corner wear visible against the colored name plates. Six star cards have been graded from this set and serve as a good barometer for the rest of the set. The key card, #82 Mickey Mantle, has been graded SGC 80 EX-MT. The #1 card, Jackie Robinson, is an extremely presentable SGC 60 EX, graded as such due to wear in the top right and lower left corners. The Satchell Paige card, #220, is graded SGC 50 VG-EX and presents more at the EX-MT level but has been downgraded due to a minor wrinkle that interrupts the paper on the reverse but does not break through to the front. The Willie Mays card, #244, has been conservatively graded SGC 40 VG and in our opinion is more accurately a VG-EX card as only a minor abrasion to the left edge causes the downgrade. The final two graded cards, #54 Bob Feller SGC 80 and #207 Whitey Ford SGC 84, are perhaps the best indicators of condition for the ungraded balance of this set. Each card is vibrant with excellent centering and only the slightest touches of wear to the corners accounting for the grade. This set presents a great opportunity to acquire one of Topps' most popular offerings in the last 60 years in a consistent condition that would not be easy to replicate if attempted today.
